Programming Language of 2023 Goes to C#

TIOBE Software has declared C# the programming language of 2023 based on its long-running popularity index. The TIOBE Programming Community Index shows year-over-year trends in programming languages based on search engine volume.

In January 2024, the top three programming languages were Python, C and C++. However, they all lost popularity over 2023 in TIOBE’s proprietary ranking system. Other major changes between January 2023 and January 2024 are as follows:

  • C# had the most growth year-over-year at +1.43%.
  • JavaScript rose from 7th to 6th place.
  • PHP rose from 10th to 7th place.
  • Visual Basic falls from 6th to 8th place.
  • SQL fell from 8th to 9th place.
  • Scratch rose dramatically from 20th place to enter the top 10 at 10th place.

C# wins 2023 programming language of the year

“C# is eating market share from Java and is getting more and more popular in domains such as web application back ends and games (thanks to Unity),” TIOBE Software CEO Paul Jansen wrote in the TIOBE Index post for January. “C# can be used free of charge and evolves at a steady pace, making the language more expressive with every new release. C# is here to stay and might even surpass Java

Fubo introduces AI-powered feature for live news programming

Sports streaming platform, FuboTV, has introduced an AI-powered feature, Instant Headlines, that generates contextual news topics while they are reported live on air.

The beta features, Instant Headlines, surfaces current programming topics and highlights them in no more than 10 words in the home page news carousel. The page constantly refreshes each channel tile in the carousel, updating the user on the current topic being discussed on that channel. From there, the user can click on the channel tile to watch the live segment.

Developed by Fubo to enhance users’ viewing experience, Instant Headline has been integrated with select 24 hour news channels, including national networks and, in certain markets, local stations.

It will be available to Fubo users on FireTV and Android TV, with the potential to be extended to other devices.

“Fubo continuously pushes the boundaries of innovation, delivering to consumers market defining product features optimized for live TV streaming,” said David Gandler, co-founder and CEO, Fubo. “We were the first virtual MVPD to offer 4K streaming and multi viewing, which we launched years ahead of our peers. It’s Fubo’s premium user experience, coupled with our aggregated sports-first content offering, that provides meaningful differentiation in a crowded streaming

White House urges devs to switch to memory-safe programming languages

The White House Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) urges tech companies today to switch to memory-safe programming languages, such as Rust, to improve software security by reducing the number of memory safety vulnerabilities.

Such vulnerabilities are coding errors or weaknesses within software that can lead to memory management issues when memory can be accessed, written, allocated, or allocated.

They occur when software accesses memory in unintended or unsafe ways, resulting in various security risks and issues such as buffer overflow, use after free, use of uninitialized memory, and double free that attackers can exploit.

Successful exploitation carries severe risks, potentially enabling threat actors to gain unauthorized access to data or execute malicious code with the privileges of the system owner.

“For over 35 years, this same class of vulnerabilities has affected the entire digital ecosystem. The challenge of eliminating classes of software vulnerabilities is an urgent and complex problem. Looking forward, new approaches must be taken to mitigate this risk,” ONCD’s report says .

“The highest leverage method to reduce memory safety vulnerabilities is to secure one of the building blocks of cyberspace: the programming language. Using memory safe programming languages can eliminate most memory safety

WBD to cut news & programming at Three in NZ

James Gibbons

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has revealed plans to overhaul its free-to-air business in New Zealand by cutting its news activities and curtailing local programming, with 200 jobs set to be cut.

The US outfit operates channels including Three and ThreeNow in New Zealand, as well as its Newshub brand, but said it is looking at “a proposed remodeling and restructure” of its channel operations in the country.

The proposal includes the closure of all Newshub’s multiplatform news operations and output, while new local programming would only be in collaboration with local funding bodies and other partners.

Around 200 jobs are set to be at risk as a result of the move, with a formal decision to be confirmed in April.

The move is part of an attempt by WBD to shift its operations in NZ to a “digitally led business”, with streamer ThreeNow at the center “supported by free-to-air linear channels.”

WBD said it wanted ThreeNow and Three’s shows to feature local programming “in conjunction with funding partners”, with acquisitions across drama, comedy, sport, reality and factual. The network currently carries shows ranging from a local version of Dancing With The Starsto The Block NZ and Black

Ministers urged to avoid Fox News style programming and weaker media regulation

The Government must ensure that the media remains strongly regulated to avoid the UK equivalent of Fox News arising, ministers have heard.

Concerns about broadcaster GB News’ content were also aired in the House of Lords, amid warnings that slackening the media watchdog Ofcom would lead down a “well-trodden path” witnessed in the US media.

Liberal Democrat former minister Lord McNally claimed GB News had “been testing the limits of how far it can go in ignoring impartiality rules by its choice of presenters and lines of questioning”, pointing to the station’s employment of Tory MPs including Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg , Esther McVey and Philip Davies.

The peer commended Ofcom’s work, but warned that suggestions from its chief executive that channels with a larger audience should be held to a higher regulatory standard “opens the way for a weakening and undermining of standards for which there is no parliamentary authority”.

He added: “And it leads us down an already well-trodden path.

“In the United States there is no impartiality governance framework around the media.

“The abolition of the fairness doctrine in the 1980s under Ronald Reagan paved the way for the fractured and polarized media environment we see today in
