The Google for Startups Accelerator: South Africa has opened applications for its three-month program, offering equity-free funding and technical support to 15 AI-driven startups in the country. The initiative is part of a broader effort to cultivate innovation within South Africa’s tech sector, particularly among founders who have historically faced systemic barriers to resources and investment. By focusing on artificial intelligence, the program aims to position local startups at the forefront of solving complex regional challenges.
Funding and resources for AI startups
The accelerator provides up to ZAR1 million (US$60,000) in equity-free funding, allowing founders to retain full ownership of their business while using the capital to accelerate growth. Selected startups will also gain access to Google’s AI tools, cloud infrastructure, and models, including hands-on access to Gemini. These resources help participants strengthen their products and enhance their technical capabilities.
Participants receive one-on-one mentorship from AI specialists and mentors. The hybrid program, running from September 28 to December 4, combines virtual workshops with in-person sessions. The curriculum covers product roadmapping, growth strategy, and goal-setting, and connects founders to a network of more than 25 local alumni and Google’s global Accelerator community.
Focus on historically disadvantaged founders
The initiative targets South African-led startups owned or controlled by historically disadvantaged persons (HDP). Applicants must demonstrate a functional AI-driven product that addresses local market needs.

Folarin Aiyegbusi, head of startup ecosystem for Africa at Google, stated, “We are committed to the long-term growth of South Africa’s tech ecosystem. Through programmes built specifically for South Africans, we give startups the support, mentorship and tools they need to thrive. As these startups grow, they drive local economic development and contribute to a more inclusive, technology-enabled future for the continent.” He added, “African startups are well placed to build products and services that address the continent’s most pressing challenges, from health and agriculture to logistics and education. This programme helps those solutions scale, responsibly and inclusively, so African-led companies can compete and lead on the global stage.”
